About the Item

René Lalique (1860-1945), Pendulette 8 jours Cinq Hirondelles,1920 René Lalique Pendulette 8 jours « Cinq Hirondelles » glass clock Also called pendulette « Vol d’Hirondelles » White molded-pressed glass with black enamel design of 5 swallows in flight Working condition Molded signature Lalique lower right and R.Lalique France etched under the base Model introduced in 1920 Illustrated in Félix Marcilhac, René Lalique Catalogue Raisonné de l’Œuvre de Verre, ÉdiTions de l’Amateur, number 761 page 376 René Lalique was born a rural 19th century man in a pre-industrialized Europe. It was a time before light bulbs, and telephones, before automobiles, washing machines and electricity. But by the time of his death in 1945 at the dawn of the atomic age, he would have completed two careers spanning two different centuries. In 1900 at the age of 40, he was the most celebrated jeweler in the world and an art nouveau artist and designer of magnificent proportions, But by 1925 at the height of the art deco era he was the most celebrated glassmaker in the world. René Lalique was both an avant-garde jeweler during the Art Nouveau era and a great master of glass during the interwar period. Innovative and highly inventive, Lalique gradually turned to mass production techniques to make beauty accessible to the greatest number of people. With an undeniable sense of business, he triumphed at the 1900 World's Fair and the 1925 Decorative Arts Exhibition, adorned transatlantic liners with his lighting creations, and worked for the powerful around the world. Unlike Émile Gallé, who worked with the opacity of glass, Lalique restored its transparency and purity, playing with geometric shapes in line with Art Deco, while retaining an emulation drawn from the world of nature and wildlife.
