About the Item

Scandinavian Modern model Festivo 2140 glasses (6 pieces) by Timo Sarpaneva For Iittala, 1970s, glass, good vintage condition, minor wear consistent with age and use. The glass pedestal is large and baroque in size, with a rich and rosy surface. It was designed for the Senator Club restaurant at Ratakatu 9 in Helsinki in the 1970s, one of the few restaurants for sexual minorities at the time. The 6 glasses are sold as a set. Designer and sculptor Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) was an internationally renowned figure in Finnish design. The multi-material artist has been described as having "a rare ability to be enraptured by and worship beauty". His rise to become an award-winning design icon began in the 1950s. Sarpaneva's work is on display in homes and museums around the world. He has been awarded the Lunning Prize and twice at the Milan Triennale, among other prizes. In 1956, House Beautiful magazine named Sarpaneva's orchid glass sculpture "The Most Beautiful Object Of The Year". He was awarded the title of Professor in 1976 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Art and Design in 1993. Timo Sarpaneva's work ranges from utility and art glass to textiles and graphics. At Iittala, Sarpaneva has played a very important role, including the design of the company's i-sign, which serves as its logo. Iittala's range also includes a cast iron pot designed by Sarpaneva in the 1960s. (From Iiittala homepage).
