About the Item

An exceptional, fine antique William III English Britannia standard silver brandy pan; an addition to our collection of 17th century silverware. This exceptional antique William III Britannia standard* silver brandy pan has a plain circular rounded form with a flared rim. The surface of the pan is plain and unembellished, with a subtle planished finished. The pan is fitted with an impressive turned carved wood handle with a hallmarked plain cylindrical Britannia silver tapering socket, in addition to a square terminal in junction with the body. The underside of the vessel bears the engraved initials 'HEM'. This exceptional brandy pan, crafted by the London silversmith Alexander Roode, is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. * Britannia Silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver). Condition This antique silver brandy pan is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The pan bears some surface blemishes in keeping with age. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body and part hallmark to the socket of the handle are very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Georgian silverware.
