Cast Iron Cooking Pot by Timo Sarpaneva

Sarpaneva's famous cast iron cooking pot, made by Rosenlew & Co. in Finland, won a silver medal at the 1961 Milan Triennale for its designer, the first of many international honors awarded to this humble but exquisitely designed object. This is a vintage example from the 1960s, made by the original manufacturer. As with all the greatest classics of 20th century design, Sarpaneva's iron "Dutch oven" reconciles innovation with tradition, and beauty with usefulness. The way the graceful curves of the teak handle relate to the gentle taper of the walls of the vessel is poetry in three dimensions. Marked with the Rosenlew "R" logo on the underside.
