Vintage French Zoomorphic Ceramic Pitcher with Lid by Jacques Blin (1953)

About the Item

Vintage French ceramic lidded pitcher (1953) by Jacques Blin. A rare and unusual piece, the pitcher with removable lid takes the form, perhaps, of a proud French coq in a hue of subtle moss green enamelled earthenware with a hint of pink. This is model 800 n°41 and had corresponding earthenware cups as an original set. It is rare in the sense that it is not covered in Blin's trademark misty glaze. During this period of Blin's early development as a ceramicist, his pieces were often monochrome and not decorated. Some, like this piece, presented two colours. Incised in the base, there is a 'Made in France' text and bears the handwritten mention, "Mirons May 1953". One of the earliest Blins to be found, this appears in the book by Vianney Frain, 'The History of the Jacques Blin Workshop", Editions du Quai des Marais, Amboise, 2016, with a picture of the model on pg. 19 (see listing photos to view this page in the book). This piece is in good overall condition. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video will be provided. About the Artist: Jacques Blin (1920-1995) gave up a career in engineering for his love of the visual arts. Blin has an immediately recognisable style characterised by a more or less misty appearance of the glaze and by decoration deeply marked in the raw clay, a method he used throughout his career (except during the creative period in the early 1950s). He frequently depicted fanciful birds, primitive animals, stylised figures and abstract motifs in his works which are always signed "J. Blin".
