Victorian Sterling Silver Meat Dish & Cover by Benjamin Smith III - London 1840

Hallmarked in London in 1779 by John Wakelin & William Taylor, this very handsome, George III period, Antique Sterling Silver Entree Dish, is round in shape, and plain in design, with reed detailing and an engraved crest to the lid. The entree dish measures 3.75"(9.5cm) tall, by 10.5"(26.5cm) in diameter, and weighs 37 troy ounces. The crest is that of the Hamilton Family, and most likely that of John Hamilton, 1st Baronet Hamilton of Marlborough House.

This magnificent Victorian meat dish and cover was made by Frederick Elkington, considered to be the finest maker of silver plate. The oval-shaped dish is kept warm by its hot water jacket and has the traditional well-and-tree channels to allow the meat juices to drain and collect. The dome is beautifully hand-engraved and has a bead pattern border to match the base. It is rare to find an original pair of base and cover, and this is a particularly fine example. A magnificent, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver serving dish with cover made by Robert Garrard II; an addition to dining silverware collection This magnificent antique Victorian sterling silver dish has a rounded hexagonal form. The body of the serving dish is plain and embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of on a cap of maintenance turned up a lion passant*. The plain body is encompassed with a cast and applied rosette border to the rim, accented with a leaf decorated corner pieces. The dish is fitted with an impressive domed hexagonal cover, embellished with chased interlacing foliate and trellis designs, all on a matte background to the rounded sides. The upper portion of the domed cover is ornamented with further chased foliate decoration, accented with a paralleling scalloped border. The cover is surmounted with a magnificent cast hallmarkedsterling silver finial realistically modelled in the form of the aforementioned crest; a cap of maintenance turned up a lion passant.
