Antique Chelsea Porcelain Damasked or Molded Octagonal Plate with Butterfly

About the Item

A fine antique English porcelain plate. By the Chelsea Porcelain Factory. Likely made in the 1750s during Chelsea's Red Anchor Period. In an octagonal form with Meissen influenced 'Gotzkowsky' manner molding throughout, a painted butterfly and other insect to the center, and painted floral sprays interspersed throughout the plate. The rim with a raised edge and brown painted line. There is an old antiquarian's label to the underside of the plate. Simply a wonderful example of early English porcelain! Date: Likely ca. 1752 - 1756 Overall Condition: It is in overall fair, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: There is a chip to the rim and some spots of overpaint throughout. We think that the large chip may have been filled and 'restored' at some point in the past and that the remaing white sections were heavily overpainted. Our working theory is that that old restoration is now removed and the accretions appear to be left over oxidized over paint. Otherwise, there is some wear to the painted floral decoration and to the brown painted rim, some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Maker: Chelsea Porcelain Marks: Unmarked Measurements: Diameter: ca. 9 1/8 in. Height: ca. 1 5/8 in. Items purchased from this dealer must delight you. Purchases may be returned for any reason for a period of 7 days.
