About the Item

Rare, unusual footed serving platter features elaborate hand-painted decor on highly textured porcelain blank. Leaf-shaped platter has an asymmetrical ornate rim; the elements of the rim continue as textured ridges, flowing along the surface of the platter. The hand-painted decor consists of multiple garlands of sapphire blue leaves with thin gold outlines; red flowers with gold outlines are interspersed throughout the leaves. The platter is standing on an oval pedestal foot that is adding height and visually elevating the piece above the tablescape. In Victorian age, dining was an extremely serious business, with unprecedented number of highly specialized sets of dishes and flatware created for breakfast, luncheon, and dinner sets. There could have been as many as 15 courses for dinner, each one requiring serving platters, with up to 65 pieces per place setting for a formal dinner; oyster plates are one of the well-known examples of Victorian tableware, as well as fish and game sets. The shape of the platter is consistent with the Victorian ice cream serving sets. Ice cream and ices made from fruit were always an important part of every meal. Unlike the contemporary ice cream, they were made in hand-cranked machine, resulting in a softer texture; the ice cream was ladled with a big spoon into an ice cream platter, which was deeper than a regular platter. The textured surfaces allowed the melting ice cream to collect on the bottom of the platter while the dessert was brought to the table and served into individual dishes. The textured surfaces of the ice cream serving platters are reminiscent of the meat platters, or Releves, but the meat platters were larger and not as deep as ice cream platters. Fine examples of ice cream services of Victorian era include multiple sets by Haviland and other Limoges manufacturers, as well as English china manufacturers (an excellent dessert service by Minton c. 1840s). The sculptural, highly detailed shape of the platter lends itself well to the striking abstract decor. The free-flowing leaves and flowers create an abstract, "Ukiyo-e" style Japanism-inspired pattern. In 1870s the Japan inspired designs, influenced by Japanese prints and artefacts made available to European artists, became overwhelmingly popular, with new styles of porcelain services presented in major shows and exhibitions. The platter is marked on the bottom with “bindenschild” (shield) or beehive mark, used by Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Vienna from 1744 to 1864, and with impressed numbers on the porcelain blank underglaze. For the pieces with this mark that were created from 1860s to 1920s, term "Royal Vienna" refers rather to the style of porcelain painting than to a single manufacturer; there was no factory called Royal Vienna, as Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Vienna closed its doors in 1864, and the so-called New Vienna, Augarten, was established in 1923. Instead, there were dozens of big and small porcelain decorators throughout Germany and Austria, who acquired blank plates from Hutschenreuther, KPM, Rosenthal and other porcelain manufacturers, and had all the necessary resources and equipment to paint, gild, glaze and fire these plates, creating some absolutely amazing works of art. The serving platter is in very good antique condition, and can be used either as serving piece in tablescape or as interior decor piece. The platter will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast and will be a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes and various interiors, from Traditional to Victorian, Chinoiserie, Transitional, Organic Modern, Eclectic, Collected, or Contemporary.
