About the Item
Blue Parrot on its perch appears to be the perfect companion. Its attention is perked and it looks as if it is about to begin a conversation about a cracker you may be holding. It comes across as friendly and strong and the intense blue of the glaze reinforces that impression. The parrot is beautifully rendered and one feels compelled to reach out and stroke its head or back. It is the creation of Bing & Grondahl. On verso is the paper stamp marked “B&G” for Bing & Grondahl, the three towers a stylized castle mark they use, the model #2235 and the initials KL.
Bing & Grondahl roots reach back to 1853, when Frederik Vilhelm Grondahl as well as brothers Meyer and Jacob Bing founded it. Grøndahl had a great deal of experience with the production process involved from his years with the Royal Copenhagen. He died a year and a half later. Brothers Bing were book and art dealers. The company started producing biscuit figures based on the works of Thorvaldsen, the renowned Danish sculptor. Soon the company became a contender in the ceramics market. In 1886 B&G introduced underglazed blue decorations. Three towers, a stylized castle mark and B&G initials have been a company logo since 1898. The three towers derived from the Coat of Arms of Copenhagen.
Between 1901 and 1925 Dahl-Jensen modeled numerous small sculptures of beasts of prey in bronze that were exhibited at Charlottenborg, Malmo, Berlin, Munich and San Francisco, but he became increasingly famous for his work in porcelain, especially animal figurines for Bing & Grøndahl. He was the busiest animal sculptor of his company, some of his Art Nouveau figurines are still produced by Royal Copenhagen.
The company's Seagull dinnerware series became known as the "National Service of Denmark" in the 1950s when it was found in one tenth of all Danish households. In 1987 the company merged with its primary competitor, the Royal Porcelain Factory under the name Royal Copenhagen.
