About the Item

This is a striking deep plate made in China for export to the West in the late Kangxi era, ca 1730. This plate is decorated with what is often the "Tek Sing" pattern; it clearly is a shipwrecked plate that has been on the bottom of the ocean for many years. A famous ship wreck was called Tek Sing and it contained thousands of plates in exactly the same pattern; this gave the pattern its name. The plate is heavily potted with very blueish glaze. The decoration consists of lotus bands containing lingzhi fungus and peach branches, with a slightly psychedelic spiral in the centre. There is also a graceful decoration on the underside, and the plate is marked with a single, rather sloppily applied circle and a Chinese character mark. Provenance: from the collection of a Dutch collector, who purchased these in the late 1940s/early 1950s at a local Dutch auction. Condition Report The plate is in sound structural condition without any repairs. It has various chips on the rim, as visible in the pictures. As the plate comes from a shipwreck, the glaze has been affected by the sea salt, which gives a beautiful fuzzy character. Antique porcelain is never perfect. Everything was handwork and kilns were fired on wood or coal, creating a lot of dust and other particles that could get baked into the porcelain by accident. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the time of production. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
