About the Item

Chinese Export Porcelain Armorial Spoon Tray Arms of Hamilton of Dalziel Qianlong Period, Circa 1750–1760 This elegant Chinese export porcelain spoon tray is delicately shaped in a lobed oval form with a scalloped rim, bordered in an iron-red spearhead pattern. The center bears the finely enameled arms of the Hamilton of Dalziel, a distinguished Scottish cadet branch of the Clan Hamilton, featuring their Latin motto: “Requiesco sub umbra” (I rest under the shade). The coat of arms displays three ermine cinquefoils and a central annulet, surmounted by a crest of an oak tree—symbolizing strength and endurance. These heraldic elements are executed in famille rose enamels, retaining excellent color and detail. Dimensions 5 in. wide x 3 ¼ in. deep x ½ in. high Attribution The arms are those of the Hamilton of Dalziel, a prominent Lowland Scottish family descended from Gavin Hamilton, a younger son of Sir James Hamilton of Cadzow in the 15th century. The branch remained closely connected to the main Hamilton line, including the Dukes of Hamilton. Provenance and Reference This service is recorded in David Sanctuary Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. I, p. 455, where a later variation is illustrated. Armorial services such as this were specially commissioned by European families during the height of the China Trade in the 18th century. (Ref: NY10844-lmr)
