About the Item

To observe an White-Tailed Eagle in full flight is always a breathtaking experience. This Eagle, above water, open talons, about to seizes its prey captures the energy and intense concentration of a bird in the midst of violent action giving full recognition of the creature's incredible speed and beauty. The sweep of the wings and the flutter of its primary feathers adds to the action captured and its incredible rendition. This sculpture was created by Hans Achtziger (1918-2003) for the Hutschenreuther Porcelain company. The raptor in flight appears to be in a dive and about to capture a prey. The underside bears the paper stamp: Lorenz Hutschenreuther, Kunstabteilung (Art Department) and the Hutschenreuther, Germany, stamp which shows the piece was created after 1969. The artist’s name is embossed in the porcelain as Achtziger. Hans Achtziger was a designer and porcelain modeler. A member of the German 'Werkbund, Achtziger trained from 1937-1939 at the Staatlichen Fachschule für Porzellanindustrie in Selb, Bavaria. After 1946 he studied at the Bau-und Handwerker Schule in Munich before joining Hutschenreuther AG where he was director of the art department from 1961-64 before going on to head the form and decoration studio. He created dinner services and a large number of animal sculptures for the company. Hutschenreuther is the name of a German family that established the production of porcelain in northern Bavaria, starting in 1814. The Hutschenreuther porcelain business was founded in 1814 by Carol’s Magnus Hutschenreuther (1794-1845) in Hohenberg an Der Eger, Bavaria, Germany. He had previously worked at the Wallendorf porcelain manufactory in Lichte (Wallendorf.) After his death in 1845, the factory was headed by his widow, Johanna Hutschenreuther, and her two sons. A large part of the factory was destroyed by a firedestroyed by a fire in 1848, but it was rebuilt. From 1860, they produced hand-painted and gilded porcelain products. In 1857, Lorenz Hutschenreuther, the elder son of Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther, established a porcelain factory in Self. They expanded from 1902 to 1969 and were named Porzellanfabriken Lorenz Hutschenreuthre AG Selb (Lorenz Hutschenreuther Porcelain Factories Company, Selb.)
