Japanese Imari Porcelain Plate with Dragon, Lions, Cranes, 17th C, Edo 1680-1700

About the Item

This is a beautiful plate with a dragon, two lions and two cranes. It was made in Japan in the Imari style some time between 1680 and 1700, during the Edo period. The plate is smoothly potted with bluish glaze, and has been finely painted with a large dragon set in two squares. The rim shows four panels with lions and cranes, alternated with beautiful red chrysanthemums. The colours are in the Imari palette of blue, red, green and gold. There is much symbolism to this plate: the dragon stands for strength, youth and power; the lions are the protectors of Buddhist law; and the cranes stand for youth and longevity and the chrysanthemums for longevity as well. Eating from this plate, or even just having it displayed in your home, should be an auspicious event and it would therefore make a fabulous wedding gift. The plate is unmarked but has two flower sprigs painted on the reverse. Condition report The late is in beautiful condition with hardly any flaws. There is a flake to the gilt on the inner rim, see last picture; and the gilt is slightly rubbed in places. Other than this, the plate is perfect. Antique porcelain is never perfect. Everything was handwork and kilns were fired on wood or coal, creating a lot of dust and other particles that could get baked into the porcelain by accident. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the time of production. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
