About the Item
A very fine tea-bowl and saucer, with a pencilled decoration of the pattern Boy on a Buffalo, after the Chinese.
The porcelain is eggshell-thin, something Worcester did for only a short time; although the result is quite stunning, the failure rate in the firing was too high to make this an economical feature.
Matching this fineness is the pencilled decoration, a term used to mean that the artist used a brush only with only a few hairs, to create pencil-thin lines.
"Boy on a buffalo" is a decorative pattern that originated in China and was later used by the Worcester porcelain factory in England. The pattern depicts a boy riding on the back of a buffalo, often with other figures or animals nearby. The boy is typically shown holding a branch or a flowering plant, and the buffalo is often depicted in a stylized and highly decorative manner.
The "boy on a buffalo" pattern is thought to have originated in the early 18th Century in China, during the Qing dynasty. It was a popular motif on Chinese porcelain, and many examples of Chinese "boy on a buffalo" porcelain can be found in museums and private collections today.
The Worcester porcelain factory, founded in England in 1751, was one of the first European factories to produce porcelain. The factory produced a wide range of decorative patterns, including many that were inspired by Chinese designs. The "boy on a buffalo" pattern was one such design that was popular among Worcester's customers from the Mid-18th Century onwards. The monochrome, pencilled version, belongs entirely to this early period.
