About the Item

This is a fabulous example of a large 18th century French walnut oil jar, with three decorative handles and short pouring spout. Retaining its original dusky-green glaze, the jar is embellished with vertical strips in an exceptionally decorative 'pinched' design. Once a much- valued vessel in a French country kitchen, and indispensable for the preservation and storage of nut and olive oils, it would today make an interesting and artistic decorative feature with a fascinating and authentic backstory. The glazed finish shows some signs of wear, with scuffs and chips in evidence throughout. However, the jar is full of character, and any flaws should be seen as testament to its utilitarian history and centuries' old daily usage. A wonderful collectors' piece.
