About the Item
Part of our huge collection of large, colorful clay vessels, known as confit pots. Derived from the French word confire (meaning “to preserve”), confit pots were used to store cooked game in their own fat before the advent of refrigeration. The earthenware section was typically wrapped in cloth and buried in the ground, with only the glazed area visible. Pots came in various sizes and colors, but the classic color is mustard yellow, although this particular pot has a small sliver of olive colored glaze, which is visible on the front side (see main photo and some of the detail photos).
The Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh, depicted confit pots in his famous series of paintings, Tournesols (Sunflowers).

Small Antique Greek Terra Cotta Jar
Located in Dallas, TX
A small pithos (a Greek storage container), this terra cotta jar has well-balanced proportions, with a thin protruding ring just above the widest part of the body. The opening has a lightly rolled rim, adding to the rounded form of the jar. It has a wonderful chalky white finish, with some commensurate losses revealing traces of the original orange hue of the terra cotta, along with areas containing a cream and brown patina. The variegated color enhances the character of this small jar that was once used to store oil or grains. Dating to the early 1900s, our Greek terra cotta...

Circa 1800 French Copper 2-Handled Vase with Chariot and Cartouche
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-worked circa 1800, this French vase is adorned with a chariot and cartouche scene. Some of the elements were hammered from the front side, in a metalworking technique known as chasing, while other motifs were worked from the verso side, which is known as repousse. It is not uncommon for the two methods to be used in tandem, and the work of this particular artisan is top notch.
The 5 ¾ diameter opening is flanked by two flared out handles that terminate on the widest part of the main body. A flowing foliate margent (repousse) adorns the top of the body, beneath the lightly textured thick neck (chased). The leaf theme continues beneath a thin ring of roundels that frames the upper body, with a sprawling foliage display that wraps around the lower body, interrupted by a pair of cartouches. One scene depicts a man in a toga with a laurel wreath crown...
