About the Item

A Verlys opalescent glass wine bottle coaster from 1930s France, showcasing the elegance of Art Deco design with a Lalique-style fish motif in raised relief. This finely crafted piece, identified as model 1455 in the 1934 Verlys catalog, is made from heavy molded opalescent glass — a signature of the Verlys workshop. The circular base, or dessous de carafe, features an aquatic theme with detailed fish in dynamic motion, evoking fluidity and harmony. It is engraved and signed “Verlys France”. An exceptional decorative object and a collector’s dream, this wine coaster blends utility with artistic beauty. It serves both as a functional tabletop piece and as a refined expression of French Art Deco glasswork. Perfect for display in a bar, dining room, or collector’s cabinet, it makes a subtle yet sophisticated statement. *** about Verlys: Societe Holophane Français was founded as a subsidiary of the Holophane Company in the USA a glasswork near Rouen in northern France in 1920, producing headlights for luxury vehicles. In 1925, they expanded to produce art glass vases and bowls and established a department for these products, which they called Verlys. Initially, they produced blown vases with several layers of glass, smooth on the outside and decorated on the inside. From 1933 onwards they concentrated on high quality pressure molded glass. Take into account that the colors on the items may vary depending on the type of lighting and the type of screen from which you see the images.
