Victorian Oval Papier Mâché Tray by Benetfink & Co, London, c.1870
A fine Victorian oval papier mâché tray, richly inlaid with mother-of-pearl and decorated with elaborate gilt scrollwork on a black ground. The central oval medallion is embellished with inlaid leaves and berries, framed by further foliate and geometric designs. The broad outer border features an inlaid mother-of-pearl band interspersed with gilt ornamentation.
The reverse bears the impressed mark “Benetfink & Co, 26 Cheapside, London”, denoting the prestigious 19th-century London house furnishing retailer known for high-quality decorative wares.
Dimensions: 24.8 in x 18.9 in (63 cm x 48 cm)
Condition: Presents well with gentle age-related wear. Minor rubbing to the gilt and small losses to inlay, all consistent with age and use.
