This heavy tin-lined French copper fish poacher, known as a turbotiere, dates to circa 1850 and was produced by the well-known factory for kitchen equipment, Maison Gaillard Paris. The turbot is a flatfish found in the Atlantic Ocean and this diamond-shaped poacher was designed to accommodate the shape of the fish, hence the name turbotiere. There is a production mark beneath the rolled rim which reads “Gaillard Maison”. A second production mark (“70”) can be seen beneath one of the large looping handles that are affixed by brass mounts with three rivets. The rivets combined with the dovetail seam on the bottom of the poacher attest to the age of production, as these were methods to assemble copper pieces prior to the late-19th century. the business was established in Sheffield in 1845 by George Walker who become an assistant of Dr John Wright. Dr John Wright had conducted important experiments on electroplating, Walker secured the royalty of electroplating for Sheffield.
The business was joined by Henry Hall and became in 1853 Walker & Hall. The factory was at Howard Street, Sheffield, while showrooms were opened in 45 Holborn Viaduct, London. Branches were opened in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cardiff, Belfast, Hull, Bristol, Melbourne and Adelaide (Australia), Cape Town (South Africa).

The pieces of this exceptional, antique Victorian sterling silver canteen of cutlery for twenty-four persons have been crafted in the Albert pattern.
The anterior and posterior surfaces of each rococo inspired, King's shape handle are embellished with scrolling leaf ornamentation.
The heel and shoulders of each piece are embellished with further scrolling decoration.

The fundamental pieces of this impressive antique London silver service were crafted by William and Elizabeth Eaton, with the sugar sifter, butter knife and pastry fork made by Samuel Hayne & Dudley Cater.

These impressive examples of antique silverware are supplied in felt cutlery rolls; which not only protect the items in storage but significantly reduces tarnishing.
As is the case with most services made by London silversmiths in the Victorian era, this flatware set is a superior gauge and quality; as to be expected by these renowned silversmiths.
Such services, with twenty-four place settings, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
Condition
This antique Albert pattern canteen of cutlery is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of each piece are all clear; the hallmarks are deeply struck due to the exceptional gauge of silver, as to be expected of these makers.

This very attractive nine piece dessert, or fruit set, is by Davenport, and decorated with their printed pattern 1151. The decoration to the rim is a chinoiserie diaper pattern printed in a pale green with hand coloured flowers and butterflies, and the central pattern is a hand coloured Chinese vase overflowing with peonies and foliage. The base of the comport bowl features moulded acanthus leaves where it joins the stem. The plates are 230 mm (9 inches) in diameter, whilst the pierced comport stands 275 mm (10.75 inches) high and has a diameter of 323 mm (12.75 inches). Overall, the set is in very good condition, with two plates carrying small chips to the footrim. The comport carries an impressed Davenport Opaque China...
