About the Item

A delightful vintage Portuguese majolica tureen with lid, handcrafted in the 1950s by F. Mendes in Caldas da Rainha, the historic heart of Portuguese pottery. This charming tureen, stamped F. MENDES, CALDAS DA RAINHA, PORTUGAL is shaped like a cabbage and finished in a beautiful light green glaze with delicate white accents, capturing the organic texture and layered form of cabbage leaves in striking detail. Caldas da Rainha, often called the capital of Portuguese ceramics, has a long tradition of pottery dating back to the Neolithic Era. The city rose to international prominence in the late 19th century thanks to artist Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro, whose naturalistic designs helped define the region’s iconic ceramic style. Cabbage ware, or louça das Caldas, became a beloved motif, inspired by the flora of Portugal and executed in a whimsical, yet functional, form. F. Mendes, believed to have worked as an artistic director at the renowned Bordallo Pinheiro factory from the 1940s to the 1970s, is celebrated for continuing this rich ceramic tradition. His pieces are known for their vibrant glazes, faithful use of original molds, and playful, nature inspired designs. This tureen is a quintessential example of mid-century Caldas da Rainha majolica. Both decorative and practical, it's perfect for serving soup or as a striking centerpiece in any French or country style kitchen or dining room. 20th Century Spanish Catalan Black Clay Botijo or Water Jug from Verdu, Signed
Located in Birmingham, AL
An early 20th century barro negro or black clay botijo, hand made and signed ROCA CAUS VERDU on the handle, by the famed pottery company, Roca Caus, in the village of Verdú in the Catalan region of Spain, circa 1900. This beautiful utilitarian pot, with its wide belly, top handle, and one mouth where it's filled and one mouth called a pitón or pitorro to drink from, is a traditional porous clay Spanish vessel originally designed to contain water. The botijo is a typical element of Spanish culture and can be found in nearly every rural town and varies in shape, color, and material depending on the area. The Verdú jugs are known for their ability to keep water cool and very fresh because of their porosity. The expression "they always cry" is well known. Today, this antique clay jug can be used as a vase, stand alone conversation piece, or grouped with other pieces of blackware on a table, shelf or kitchen counter. Beautifully decorative, it will be a wonderful addition to any collection. Each piece is a unique work of art, and its dusky matte patina only adds to its overall character and charm.
