About the Item

Victorian Elkington & Co. Electroplated Wine Funnel with Gilt Bowl, Dated 1853 A superb mid-19th century English wine funnel by the renowned firm Elkington & Co., one of the most innovative and prestigious silversmiths of the Victorian era. This fine example, dated 1853 via Elkington’s internal date lettering system, showcases their early excellence in silver electroplating—a technique they famously pioneered and patented. The funnel features a detachable pierced strainer insert with a decorative radiating star pattern, used to aerate and filter sediment from wine while decanting into crystal or silver vessels. The interior bowl is richly gilt, protecting against acidity and adding a refined golden contrast to the gleaming silver exterior. A gracefully flared spout completes the elegant, utilitarian form. Stamped ELKINGTON & CO along the rim and marked with the firm’s date code letter “N” and model number 2223. Highly functional and visually striking, this Georgian Revival wine funnel is a classic gentleman’s accessory and a perfect addition to any connoisseur’s cellarette, barware collection, or refined tablescape. Excellent antique condition with only minor surface wear consistent with age. The silver plating is bright and intact; the gilt interior is luminous. Both parts are present.
