Antique silver plated coffee and tea set by Elkington & Co made in the United Kingdom in the 1880s. Elkington & Co are one of the most important names in English Silver and Silver Plate. Elkington started in Birmingham in 1836, and experimented with innovative gilding techniques. By 1838 they had discovered and patented a new way to electroplate one metal on to the surface of another. By 1840 production was already underway with silver electroplated wares. The company received financial backing from Josiah Mason in 1842 (renaming the firm Elkington, Mason & Co between 1842 and 1861) and was extremely successful. It introduced electrotyping as a new method of production for silver plated items. Elkington & Co exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with enormous success. Elkington held Royal Warrants for Queen Victoria, King Edward VI, King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI. The Elkington & Co. name is still in use today as manufacturers under the auspices of British Silverware Ltd. The antique silver service...

A magnificent, fine and impressive, large pair of antique George V English sterling silver bowls / centrepieces in the Art Nouveau style, an addition to our presentation silverware collection. These magnificent and large antique George V English sterling silver bowls/centrepieces have a compressed circular form onto a knopped pedestal and domed circular foot. The plain body of each piece is encircled with an impressive band of applied and chased olive leaf festoon decoration consisting of overlapping leaf designs with a bead motif to subdivision. Both sides of each piece is further ornamented with exceptional and large applied vacant cartouche bordered with a ribbon tied oak and olive branch, in addition to a scrolling and leaf motif to the upper portion. The upper portions of these concaved cartouches are subtly elevated and joined to the moulded decoration to the shaped rim. These antique silver bowls are fitted with impressive and large Art Nouveau style scrolling handles with plain plateaued upper portions and subtle thumbpieces. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver fruit serving set consists of a pair of fruit serving / berry spoons and a pair of grape shears. Each piece has exceptional scrolling leaf decorated handles, accented with paralleling incurved borders, in addition to bright cut engraved geometric detailing. The posterior surface of each piece is plain and unembellished. The serving/berry spoons have elongated, rounded bowls embellished with exceptional chased floral and scrilling leaf ornamentation amidst bead borders; the outer rim of each spoon has a crimped finish. The interior of each silver spoon bowl retains the original gilding. The fine pair of antique Victorian sterling silver grape shears has a hinged scissor action.
