Pair of Late 19th Century Wood Mounted Copper Reliefs of Shakespeare Scenes
By Elkington & Co.
Located in Dallas, TX
Utilizing the metalworking technique known as repousse, where images are hammered from the verso side, this pair of copper reliefs depict two scenes from Shakespearean plays. After the original 1812 panels by Elkington & Co, the famous silver manufacturing company from Birmingham, England, our scenes are from the late 1800’s and have been mounted on wood backing boards with a high sheen black finish and beveled edges.
One relief features a scene from The Merchant of Venice, while the other depicts Much Ado About Nothing. Both scenes are surrounded by a raised molding festooned with arabesque. The molding is bordered on all sides by a shaped border adorned with a mascaron in each corner surmounting foliage and stage props. In between the faces along both vertical side is a geometric engraving topped by an apothecary scale (Merchant) and lyres (Much Ado). All other elements are identical, with the exception of the plaque at the bottom that gives the play’s title. Of note is the cartouche above each scene, which depicts two winged cherubs holding a laurel wreath above a cameo of The Bard himself. Shakespeare is surrounded by books and a floral swag. Our copper relief panels...

- Who is Tiffany and Co owned by?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022The legendary American luxury house Tiffany & Co. is currently owned by Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), which completed the acquisition of the company in January, 2021. The firm started out modestly — Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young founded it in Connecticut as a “stationery and fancy goods emporium” in 1837, at a time when European imports still dominated the nascent American luxury market. Upon Charles’ death in 1902, his son Louis Comfort Tiffany took over artistic direction for the brand. On 1stDibs, find authentic Tiffany & Co. pieces from some of the world's top sellers.
- Why is Jacob & Co. so expensive?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024Jacob & Co. is so expensive for a few reasons. For one thing, many of the Swiss watchmaker's timepieces are complicated. One features more than 830 components, each of which must be produced or purchased, tested and painstakingly assembled by hand, adding to the cost. The materials that go into each watch, such as 18-karat gold and genuine diamonds, are costly as well. Plus, only a limited number of timepieces leave the watchmaker's workshop each year, so demand usually far exceeds supply. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Jacob & Co. watches.
