About the Item

An antique George I English Britannia silver porringer; an addition to our Georgian silverware collection. This antique George I Britannia standard silver porringer has a circular rounded form. The lower portion of this antique porringer is embellished with embossed fluted decoration in a swirl design. The upper portion is encircled with further embossed decoration amidst two bands of quatrefoil motifs. The decoration to the body incorporates a scrolling leaf and scale motif bordered vacant oval cartouche to one side. This silver porringer is fitted with two ribbed S scroll handles. Britannia silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver). Condition This antique porringer is a very good gauge of silver; for such a piece of its age. The porringer is in a very good condition; there is an old repair to the lower socket of one handle, this does not detract from the aesthetically pleasing appearance. The hallmarks struck to the upper rim of the body and the maker's mark to the underside all show signs of wear in keeping with age. Dimensions Height 9cm/3.5" Width across handles 17cm/6.7" Diameter of top 11cm/4.3" Diameter of base 7cm/2.75" Weight 6 troy ounces/190g Maker: Humphrey Payne Origin: London, England Date: 1717 Video: A video of this fine piece is available upon request. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Georgian silverware.
