Antique Georgian Solid Silver Cup/Wine Cooler with Lid, Earl Interest - 1826

About the Item

We are delighted to offer this fabulous solid silver cup and cover made by Barnards (Rebecca Emes & Edward Barnard I) in London, 1826. This large cup/trophy/wine cooler is made with an impressive degree of finesse and quality - from the overall proportions, gauge of silver and intricacies, this piece displays wonderful elements of Georgian silversmithing. The cup is crafted from a heavy (over 1.5kg) piece of silver with a pedestal foot and Campagna-shaped form. The top of the cup features a wonderful frieze of cast-silver acorn leaves, all intricately stippled and engraved with further embellishments. On either side, ornate cast silver foliate handles complete the overall appearance and also assist in ergonomics/moving the cup. The bottom portion presents further foliate and floral motifs with a wonderful chased and stippled design as if the leaves caress and support the cup from underneath. The attention to detail and a "no costs cut" approach is apparent with the additional decorations around the stem and base of the foot. The centre is engraved with a presentation engraving "From Earl Percy to Joseph Snowballer. Esq. 1889" - most probably from Henry George Percy, 7th Duke of Northumberland (29 May 1846 – 14 May 1918). The cup also features a heavy top lid that complements the overall aesthetic and proportion - further embellishments of foliate design and a finial are present. Whilst this piece would make for a fabulous centrepiece attraction on a dining table, sideboard or part of a luxurious interior display, it may equally be used practically in the modern-day for many uses such as a wine cooler, flower vase or as a biscuit barrel. The cup is fully hallmarked with English marks on the side and matching marks on the inside of the lid. *All images with other items are for display purposes; this listing is for the title item only.
