This fine antique Victorian Newcastle sterling silver sugar sifter has a pierced decorated handle bearing a trefoil design to the terminal. The anterior surface of the spoon handle is embellished with engraved interlacing decoration accented with simplified organic motifs. The reverse of each antique silver sugar sifter handle bears the contemporary engraved initials 'R.W.', in addition to the full Newcastle hallmarks. The shell shaped bowl features a plain rounded heel to the reverse and retains the original gilding. The bowl of the sifter is embellished with pierced trefoil-shaped motifs, incorporating further pierced pale decoration to the lower portions. This exceptional Victorian sugar sifter is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, and secures with a push fit catch. The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Reid & Sons, Goldsmiths to the Queen, Newcastle Upon Tyne'. This exceptional antique silver sugar sifter was crafted by the renowned Newcastle silversmith Christian John Reid of Reid & Sons. Such original Newcastle silver boxed flatware examples in this exceptional condition are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Condition This antique sterling silver sifter spoon is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp and the original gilding is in excellent condition; this determines the piece has seen little to no use. The hallmarks struck to the reverse of the handle is very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this exceptional example of Victorian silverware.
