Antique Victorian Rare Sterling Silver Jug (1873)

A magnificent, fine and impressive antique Victorian sterling silver jug with royal interest; part of our antique silver jugs and dining collections. This magnificent antique Victorian sterling silver covered beer jug has a circular shaped form. The undulating body of this silver jug is embellished with impressive continuous village scene of figures at various pursuits, with spiralling fruiting vines to the background; this ornamentation was influenced by Flemish/Dutch genre artwork, such as pieces crafted in the late 17th century by David Teniers II. The underside of the lip is further embellished with a cast model of a youth; it can be determined this figure is poised to catch the last drop from the spout. The jug is fitted with an exceptional hinged hallmarked cover ornamented with further fruiting vine decoration, in addition to two cast figurines to the posterior portion. The cover is surmounted with an impressive cast bud style finial. The interior of the cover is embellished with the contemporary engraved inscription 'Henry Peverill Le Mesurier. From Their Royal Highnesses The Princes Philip and Augustus of Saxe Coburg Gotha, as a Friendly Souvenir of their Sport with him in India, 1873'. This antique silver jug is fitted with an impressive cast silver vine decorated handle, with a bifurcating lower terminal. The underside of the jug bears an applied registration plaque bearing 'Elkington, 1325'. This magnificent Victorian silver jug features the original gilding to the interior. This magnificent and versatile jug will have predominantly used for beer, however could be utilised as a water or wine jug. Such lidded jugs of this style are typically electroplated; solid sterling silver examples are rare and are highly desirable. This exceptional jug, crafted by the renowned London silversmith Frederick Elkington of Elkington & Co, is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. Condition This antique English silver wine jug is a magnificent gauge of silver, magnificent quality and in magnificent condition. The cast and embossed decoration is very sharp and the engraved decoration is very crisp. Full English hallmarks struck to the neck of the jug are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. A fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver sparrow beak style creamers, boxed; an addition to our silver teaware collection. These impressive antique Victorian sterling silver cream jugs have a plain baluster sparrow beak style form onto a circular spreading foot. The body of each jug is embellished to one side with two impressive bright cut engraved crests, a stag's head erased and a thistle erect, leaved below the motto ‘Yvery’. The jugs are fitted with opposing scroll handles, each ornamented with a subtle plain thumb piece. These impressive antique cream jugs have sparrow beak style spouts. These cream jugs are fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior and push fit catch. The interior of the box bears the retailer’s mark ‘William Angus & Sons Silversmiths, 27 & 29 Lord Street, Liverpool’. A magnificent, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver wine/water jug - boxed; an addition to our diverse wine and drinks related collection This magnificent antique Victorian sterling silver jug has a bulbous rounded knopped form onto a circular domed foot. The swept neck of the jug is embellished with chased decoration to either side of a convex ribbed knop. The lower portion of the neck is encompassed with a band of stylised foliate designs, surmounting a strapwork style border incorporating foliate, applied bead and figural mask ornamentation. The body of this impressive claret jug is further ornamented with chased elongated quatrefoil designs, alternating with applied bead bordered cartouches. The flared upper rim to the lip of the jug is embellished with an applied moulded decorated border. This impressive 19th century jug in sterling silver is fitted with an exceptional cast silver elongated scrolling handle with a scrolling leaf decorated thumbpiece accented with an emanating bead decorated handpiece, in addition to a rosette design to the lower terminal. The vessel is supported by a bead decorated knop to a circular domed foot, ornamented with further chased foliate decoration, on a matte background. The interior of the jug retains the original gilding. This magnificent wine jug is fitted to the original hinged leatherette presentation box, with a satin and velvet lined interior. An exceptional, fine and impressive, antique Victorian sterling silver water pitcher/jug; part of our antique dining silverware collection. This exceptional sterling silver water jug has a baluster shaped form onto a circular spreading foot. The waisted cylindrical neck of this silver jug is embellished with impressive stylised leaf motifs, segmented with opposing scroll designs. The lower swept portion of the neck is encompassed with the contemporary engraved inscription 'To Charles Edward Rawlins, junior honorary secretary to the Liverpool Anti Monopoly Association anno domini MDCCCXLII to MDCCCXLVII'; these Roman numerals convert to the Latin dates 1842 and 1847. The bulbous portion of the body is embellished with exceptional engraved scene depicting a female figure draped in flowing fabric being carried by a male character; this male could be associated to Hermes, the Greek Olympian deity and the herald of the gods. The other side of this exceptional jug is further embellished with a main, central female being adorned and clothed by three semiclad figures. The body of this exceptional example of antique silverware is further ornamented with two large scrolling palmette style designs, all on a matte background. The lower portion of the jug is encompassed with an interlacing scalloped style pendant bud design. The neck is embellished to the upper portion with impressive gadroon decoration to the shaped rim. The jug is fitted with an exceptional hinged hallmarked cover, surmounted with an impressive cast leaf decorated thumbpiece, accented with further scrolling decoration to the domed portion. This antique silver jug is fitted with an impressive elevated loop style handle ornamented with an exceptional cast and applied figural mark design to the lower terminal. This exceptional jug was crafted by the renowned London silversmiths Edward, John & William Barnard. Condition This antique English silver water jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver claret jug, influenced by the Aesthetic Movement; an addition to our diverse silverware collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver claret jug has a circular rounded form onto a circular plateaued foot. The upper portion of the jug is encompassed with bands of bright cut engraved evolute scroll, vertical pale and oval motifs accented with a simplified leaf garland and delicate scrolling pattern to the rim, all influenced by the Aesthetic Movement. The lower portion of the body is embellished with large fan designs segmented with tri-lobed motifs; each large module incorporates a horizontal pale, matte pattern. The Victorian silver claret jug is fitted with a hinged hallmarked cover ornamented with a bright cut engraved leaf wreath design encompassing a contemporary crest of a stag's head erased. The cover is surmounted with a cast and applied leaf decorated thumbpiece, reflecting the shape of the fan designs to the body. This impressive jug is fitted with an exceptional embossed elongated S scroll handle featuring a bi-lobed ribbed formation and embellished with bright cut engraved oval motifs to either side, in addition to a scalloped, scrolling lower terminal. Either side of the lip is ornamented with a bright cut engraved simplified leaf design, in addition to a plain applied moulded border to the rim. The plateaued foot is embellished with further bright cut engraved garland designs, reflecting the ornamentation of the body and cover. The interior surface of the cover retains the original gilding. The underside of the foot bears the retailer's mark 'J. Mayer, Silversmith, Liverpool'. Condition This antique Victorian silver claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp. The jug has been professionally cleaned and is ready for use. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the base and part hallmarks to the cover are very clear.
