About the Item

Pair of early 19th century Georgian sterling silver covered entree dishes. Identical forms and design with elegant shaped octagonal sides. Each cover has a solid ornate detachable handle and a beautifully engraved armorial coat of arms of leopards flanking a shield with a crown. Small engraved banners in Latin read "Aut Num Quam / Tentes/ Aut Perfice," which translates "Do or do not / There is no try." Hallmarks on covers and dishes are not identical. Additional marks (dots) indicate this was originally a set of four, and one cover in this pair is not an exact fit. It probably fit one of the other dishes in the original set.
