About the Item

This exceptional parcel-gilt silver beaker, crafted by the Frankfurt master Samuel Birckenholtz circa 1710, stands as a fine example of early 18th-century German silverwork. Of tapered cylindrical form, the beaker rests on a spreading foot chased with ornate strapwork and stylized flowerheads, delicately worked in relief to provide texture and visual depth. The foot’s crisp, baroque decoration adds a foundational richness that gracefully supports the elongated body. The body itself, later engraved in a style harmonious with the original period, features three finely detailed oval cartouches framed by elegant strapwork and scrolling acanthus motifs. These cartouches each depict powerful and evocative biblical scenes rendered with deep narrative sensitivity: Elijah Being Fed by the Raven, a moment of divine providence rendered with quiet dignity. Daniel in the Lions’ Den, capturing both drama and faith in a tightly composed engraving. The Spies of Canaan, returning with the fruit of the Promised Land—symbolic of divine promise and human endeavor. The surrounding decoration is lavish yet composed, with scrolling foliate engravings that unify the three narrative medallions while enhancing the visual rhythm of the beaker.
