About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive 18th century, German silver gilt beaker made in Hanau; part of our continental silverware collection. This exceptional antique German beaker has a tapering cylindrical form. The surface of this antique silver beaker is embellished with large chased stemmed floral designs accented with scrolling foliate decoration. The upper and lower portions of the beaker are encompassed with bands of tooled decoration, in addition to an applied moulded border to the rim. This exceptional German silver beaker retains the original gilding; this has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion to an aesthetically pleasing mellow color. The base of the silver beaker retains the silversmith’s centre punch mark, in addition to the German hallmarks. Early 18th century pieces in such exceptional condition are rare to the market. The hallmarks struck to the underside of this impressive beaker include: City mark: Nurnberg , Germany Assay scrape: Zickzack line (Tremolierstrich) Condition This fine antique German beaker is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The chased decoration is very sharp. German hallmarks struck to the underside of the cup are all clear.
