John White / Paul De Lamerie Antique Sterling Silver Pair of Candlesticks, 1739

About the Item

Hallmarked in London in 1739 by John White, this exquisite pair of George II, Antique Sterling Silver Candlesticks, are cast and are each engraved with an original crest. Each candlestick measures 8.5"(21cm) tall, by 4.75"(12cm) wide and deep, and the pair together weigh a substantial 42.9 troy ounces. John White is described in Grimwade as "a mysterious figure, as his work, somewhat rare, is of high quality and Huguenot character, without there being any apparent connection in his training or parentage with the immigré school." Further research into John White has shown a connection to Paul de Lamerie, with de Lamerie being noted as the major creditor after Whites's death. It would seem likely, due to the quality of the work with White's mark, that it was made for him by de Lamerie, and that White himself was a retailer and not a silversmith. This design of candlestick is also seen with Paul de Lamerie's mark, further establishing a connection between the two, and explaining why these candlesticks are of such high standard.
