Pair of George II Cast Candlesticks Made in London in 1748 by William Gould

About the Item

A VERY FINE & SUBSTANTIAL PAIR OF GEORGE II CAST CANDLESTICKS MADE IN LONDON IN 1748 BY WILLIAM GOULD. The Candlesticks are cast and modelled in a much larger version of this style than is usually seen at this date. Each stands on a shaped foot decorated with a raying shell in each corner. The baluster shaped stems are also decorated with reeding and shells, as are the pull off nozzles. The Candlesticks are in quite excellent condition and are fully marked in the foot. William Gould was a specialist candlestick maker and was apprenticed to his brother James. He had workshops in Old Street when these pieces were made. His greatest work is without doubt the Knesworth Chandelier of the Fishmongers' Company of 1752, for which the renter warden's account book for 1752-54 shows a payment of £ 484. 1s. 3d. Height: 9.5 inches, 23.75 cm. Base Diameter: 6.1 inches, 15.25 cm. Weight: 56oz the pair.
