Large Antique Silver Flagon Jug Budapest c. 1886 Austro - Hungarian

About the Item

A magnificent Antique Silver Flagon of notably large size and heavy weight. This oversized Silver Jug is embellished with ornate chasing. The Body of the Flagon has a pair of chased cartouches showing views of Buda & Pest. The body of the Flagon is further embellished with scroll and foliate designs surrounding the cartouches and chased bands showing human and lion faces. The handle of the Flagon is designed after a medieval dolphin design and the domed lid has an impressive finial and sea creature thumb piece. There is a small cartouche engraved 'METALLIST, 4 MAI 1886', Made in Budapest (Austro Hungarian Empire) in c. 1886 by Antal Bachruch. Approx. Weight - 3530g / 113.5oz Approx. Height - 36.8cm Approx. Diameter at Base - 20.7cm Approx. Width incl Handle & Spout - 25cm This Flagon has has an Austro - Hungarian Hallmarked and is stamped with the makers mark of Antal Bachruch. A fine and impressive, large antique cut-glass and Austro-Hungarian silver mounted lemonade/water jug; an addition to our wine and drink related collection. This exceptional antique Austro-Hungarian silver and cut glass water / lemonade silver jug has a tapering cylindrical form. The neck is fitted with a fine and impressive substantial silver hallmarked mount with the original hallmarked flat hinged cover and plain swept lobed thumb piece. The cover is further embellished with the impressive contemporary engraved initials 'SC' below a coronet. This antique cut glass lemonade jug is fitted with a plain angular S scroll handle with bracketed curved terminals. The large glass body of the jug is ornamented with a dimpled effect in addition to a star cut motif to the underside of the base. The hallmarks struck to the surface of the impressive mount include: Importer/Retailer's mark: Bachruch (Antal Bachruch) Assay mark: P (Pest, Hungary) Silver quality/purity mark: Dianakopf mark (.800, 800/1000) Condition The mount of this antique lemonade jug is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition. The glass is in perfect condition. The engraved decoration is all very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the mount are all very clear. An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Austro-Hungarian silver spice tower; an addition to our silver Judaica collection. This exceptional antique Austro-Hungarian silver spice box has been modelled in the form of a tower. The cuboid shaped spice box is ornamented with exceptional silver filigree work within a plain arched frame. This impressive vessel is fitted with a hinged door embellished with contemporary engraved initials. The upper portion of this impressive antique silver spice tower is embellished with four articulating flag designs encompassing a tapering paneled chute. The tower's chute is ornamented with further filigree and rope twist decoration and terminating with a scalloped knop to an undulating guidon shaped flag. The spice compartment surmounts a plain wirework style pedestal, accented with a further scalloped knop. The square shaped foot is ornamented with filgree decoration and supported by four plain semi-spherical feet.
