A Polish Silver Torah Shield by Pogorzelski, Warsaw, 1890
About the Item
A Gorgeous Polish Silver Torah Shield, made by Pogorzelski in Warsaw, 1890.
19th-century Poland was home to one of the largest populations of Jewish people living in Europe in that period.
Many artifacts especially significant ones like this Torah shield were considered a holy and cherished possession of any community or synagogue of that time.
Torah shield is made in a neoclassical style, embossed with rampant lions holding a crown in their front paws above the spread Hands of Cohen in the holy "Duchenning" fashion below an archway made of flowing acanthus leaves.
The central doored compartment is engraved with floral and foliage motifs and encloses a Torah with a Star of David under swags. Flanking the Center doorway are rows of chased laurel leaves separated by beaded and scroling designs.
A lit menorah with eight foliate branches and sprouting acanthus leaves is centered at the lower half of the shield flanked by two phoenixes in flight with two large foliate-adorned banded columns framing the Torah shield.
At the lower edge, a prominent beaded border with a twisted rope design tops a Hebrew dedication that reads
"This Tzitz (Shield) and Hand (pointer) of Silver were given as a Donation by 'Yitzchak the son of Pinchas the Cohen' with his Wife 'Etul Leah' in the year 1913"
Knowing the translation of this dedication tells us two things; First, the reason for the Cohen's hands chased into the top of the shield was very fitting as the person who donated the item was a Cohen. Second, this shield had a matching Torah pointer which was donated to the congregation along with the shield
A chain is affixed through three rings applied to the upper back of the Torah shield for the purpose of hanging over a Torah scroll and mantle.
Hallmarked and signed underneath the central doored compartment.

1830s Russian Silver Torah Pointer/Yad
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Russian silver Torah pointer/yad; an addition to our Judaica silverware collection
This exceptional antique 19th century Russian silver Torah pointer/yad has a knopped tapering cylindrical form.
The bulbous knops are each plain and unembellished.
The plain tapering handpiece is embellished with applied interlacing designs to the upper portion.
The shaft of this silver Torah pointer has a stranded twist design, to an undulating circular collar style knop.
This lower knop terminates with an impressive hand, with its index finger pointed.
The hallmarks struck to the handpiece of this exceptional silver Torah pointer include:
Silver quality/purity mark: 84 (84 zolotniks*)
City Mark: Moscow, Russia
Maker's mark: ФВ (untraced)
Such original Russian examples are becoming increasingly difficult to locate; due to their formation they do not stand the test of time.
* 84 zolotniki is equivalent to 875/1000 or .875 standard silver
NOTE: The Hebrew word yad (יד) translates to "hand" and is used while reading the Torah. The yad ensures that an impure hand does not touch the fragile parchment; issues also arise when ink does not absorb to the velum and there can be damage to the wording.
