About the Item

This unusual 833 silver stirrup cup was made in Portugal by Luiz & David Ferreira and was designed for use as a drinking vessel by hunters on horseback. The cup has been made in the form of a lifelike hound's head and features crisply detailed facial features that include eyes intently focused on something just above the plane of its long pointed snout. The dog's ears are laid back, adding to the impression that it is absorbed with something of great interest. The surface of the hound's head, ears, and neck bear linear decoration mimicking short fur. Its neck is encircled by a collar equipped with a buckle at the back and an oval ring at the front. The bottom is finished with a rolled and polished rim. The stirrup cup is in very good original condition with no repairs. It has not been polished in order to preserve the finish. As a vintage item, the piece shows signs of age and wear including light scuffs and scratches. The piece stands 4.75"at its tallest and is 2.375" by 2.25" across the base. It weighs 156.3 grams and has a 10-fluid-ounce capacity. The cup bears Luiz & David Ferreira's mark located at the dog's throat reading "DAVID FERREIRA PORTO" along with the initials "LF" in a cartouche-shaped shield. It also carries the domestic second standard Eagle 833 silver mark in use between 1887-1984 along with an illegible mark. This beautifully made .833 silver dog's head stirrup cup would be a fantastic addition to a collection of antique/vintage stirrup cups or works equally well showcased on its own. A lovely and highly desirable example of the genre.

Antique Rookwood Pottery Hand Painted Vessel Gorham Engraved Silver Decoration
By Rookwood Pottery Co., Gorham
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This late 19th century glazed earthenware mug was crafted in the studios of Cincinnati Ohio's renowned Rookwood Pottery Company and has a traditional form with an ear-shaped handle having a thumb rest. The exterior of the piece is finished in standard glaze and features hand painted decoration executed by highly regarded artist William Purcell McDonald (1864-1931). The decor has an appealing wine harvest theme consisting of grape vines that snake across the surface. The vines are studded with leaves in various shades of green along with two dangling clusters of plump reddish grapes. McDonald's application of paint is slightly raised in places giving the image a dimensional quality. The mug is further ornamented with an ornate silver overlay manufactured by Gorham. The silver decoration covers the handle and rim and includes a series of large etched foliate scrolls and flowers that extend across the body. There is also an eye-catching latticed area that provides a strong visual contrast with the gentle curving motifs found on the other parts of the silver overlay. The underside of the mug has an impressed RP mark along with shape 422 and the letter W. It also carries the incised initials of the artist - W. P. McD - and the letter L. The underside of the silver foot rim is stamped Gorham Manufacturing Co. along with a hand engraved mark reading S 1274 S. This highly collectible Rookwood silver...

Rubboli Lustre Majolica Double-Handled Compote with Mask Head Detail
By Rubboli
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This early 20th century piece of Italian lustreware was made by the renowned Rubboli family pottery in the Umbrian town of Gualdo Tadino, Italy. Italian lustreware Majolica production traces its origins to the Renaissance. The art was revived in Gualdo Tadino during the last quarter of the 19th century, largely due to the efforts of ceramist Paolo Rubboli. Rubboli established his pottery in the region around 1870, and became known for the high quality of his distinctive cobalt, red and gold Neo-Renaissance lustreware. Rubboli's wife Daria and sons Lorenzo and Alberto continued Paolo's efforts after his death in 1890, and joined the newly formed consortium Societa Ceramica Umbria in 1920. Rubboli pieces dating to the period are marked with a blue underglaze "SCU" in a triangle mark along with a conjoined "PR" monogram in homage to Paolo's work. This large ceramic Neo-Renaissance Rubboli double handled compote is finished in cobalt, red and gold lustre. The piece consists of a round bowl at the top with elongated applied handles at either side, all of which rest upon a pedestal base. The bowl features two bas-relief winged mask heads on the exterior which have been depicted with open mouths sprouting handles in the form of serpent-like forked tongues. The exterior is also painted with pairs of imposing gryphons, each of which flank a large urn. The interior of the bowl is also heavily decorated and bears a fantastical winged lion set at the center of a series of scrolling acanthus leaves and urns, best seen in image 8. The remainder of the piece is finished with foliate and geometric motifs. It is of note that a similar piece was included in the traveling exhibit of important Majolica and lusterware entitled 'The Rubboli Collection - Italian lustre pottery in Gualdo Tadino' held in the Chiesa Monumentale di San Francesco between July 17 – October 3, 2010. The compote is in excellent original condition with no restorations or repairs. There are some glaze skips present on the piece as well as minor chips at the base of the pedestal foot which do not detract from the appearance of the compote and are mentioned for accuracy. The underside of the piece bears the blue underglaze Rubboli family Società Ceramica Umbra mark cited above consisting of the letters “SCU” within a triangle along with the entwined Paolo Rubboli 'PR' monogram, which was used from 1920 to 1931. The 3lb 5oz compote stands...
