About the Item

A beautifully preserved example of late 17th-century German silverwork, this elegant silver-gilt beaker was crafted in Leipzig circa 1670 by the accomplished silversmith Joachim Krumpholtz. It exemplifies the refined decorative sensibility of Central European drinking vessels of the period. The beaker is gilded overall, its surface finely engraved with stylized foliate motifs in a rhythmic and lyrical composition. Delicate trees rise from the ground, their slender trunks extending into gracefully arching branches, each adorned with closed, heart-shaped blossoms and naturalistic leaf forms. These floral and arboreal elements are framed against a background of dotted horizontal lines, adding visual texture and enhancing the depth of the botanical design. At the base and upper rim, the vessel is encircled by solid gilded bands, the upper terminating in a slightly stepped border that subtly elevates the beaker's silhouette. The top band also bears a later-added ownership inscription, neatly pricked into the gilded surface, recording the name of a previous owner and the date of dedication—1774 an evocative testament to the beaker's long history and personal significance. Maker’s mark for Joachim Krumpholtz and city mark for Leipzig are present, further affirming its distinguished provenance. A poetic and finely crafted vessel, this beaker captures both the aesthetic grace and technical precision of early Baroque German silver, imbued with the warmth of personal dedication and historical continuity.
