A Silver and Wedgewood Torah Pointer by Daniel Blumberg, Pennsylvania 1959

About the Item

A Unique Silver and Wedgewood Jasperware Torah Pointer made by Daniel Blumberg in Pennsylvania in 1959. Most Torah pointers are usually made with a single constant metal. While there are some exceptions where two materials are mixed to make a unique item, this is the first time we have seen a Torah pointer made with Silver and inlaid Wedgewood Jasperware. This distinctive Torah pointer was created by attaching a foliate-designed silver crown affixed with a long silver chain to the tip of the blue-colored Wedgewood Jasperware handle. The handle is adorned with inlaid white flowers and flowing acanthus leaves on the upper handle. Decorated with a gilded ring embellished with pearl-colored stones as the handle tapers smoothly down to the shaped vintage sleeve. The pointer is finished with a cuffed pointing hand. Signed by the maker and marked on the smooth tapering upper silver handle.

The hallmarks struck to the handpiece of this exceptional silver Torah pointer include: Silver quality/purity mark: 84 (84 zolotniks*) City Mark: Moscow, Russia Maker's mark: ФВ (untraced) Such original Russian examples are becoming increasingly difficult to locate; due to their formation they do not stand the test of time. * 84 zolotniki is equivalent to 875/1000 or .875 standard silver NOTE: The Hebrew word yad (יד) translates to "hand" and is used while reading the Torah. The yad ensures that an impure hand does not touch the fragile parchment; issues also arise when ink does not absorb to the velum and there can be damage to the wording. Condition This antique yad...
