Viennese Art Déco Silver Peche Style Coffee Pot by J.C. Klinkosch, Circa 1920

About the Item

Excellent, elegant silver coffee pot in the style of Dagobert Peche's designs: Raised, widening vessel on a stepped, funnel-shaped base, connected by a beaded ring with hammered, spirally chased grooves, cord band border on the foot rim, as well as on the upper, outer rim of the vessel, tall, slender swan-neck spout, ebonized, turned wood handle mounted at a distance by artfully curved bars, fluted raised, laterally hinged lid with spiral decoration chased up by hammering and ebonized wooden knob. All surfaces with fine hammered decoration in the style of the metalwork of the Wiener Werkstätte. Finest craftsmanship by the Viennese silversmith Josef Carl Klinkosch. Dagobert Peche (1887 - 1923) was an Austrian artist and was regarded as the most imaginative representative of the Wiener Werkstätte. He proved to be an ornamentalist who always found the right form and breathed new life into the ossified arts and crafts of his time. His creative imagination, which placed ornamental form above functional form, enlivened all areas of arts and crafts and found new possibilities of decorative design for every material and every technique. His talent only came to full fruition in 1915 when Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) invited him to work as an artist in the Wiener Werkstätte. Peche became known for his love of purpose-free, playful Mannerist objects, over-bred luxury objects and the capricious inventiveness on which his designs were based. Hallmarks: 'JCK 800' - Manufactory sign of Josef Carl KLINKOSCH, 800 silver Knight's helmet - picture brand of KLINKOSCH Founded in 1830 by Stephan Mayerhofer and Carl Klinkosch: 'K. k. Court and state priv. Gold, silver u. Plating manufacturers'. The Mayerhofer & Klinkosch silver workshop had developed into one of the most successful companies in the industry by 1850. In 1869 Josef Carl Klinkosch became the sole owner and the successor company 'Gold-, Silber- und Metallwaren-Fabrik J. C. Klinkosch' was established. The company's success remained the same: Like his father, Josef Carl Klinkosch also received numerous commissions from the imperial court in Vienna.
