Antique English Sterling Silver Fruit Basket Bowl Centerpiece Mappin Webb 1913
About the Item
Superb Edwardian Heavy Gauge Silver Swing Handle Fruit Basket or Centerpiece of unusually large proportions and generous weight.
The waisted form upper flaired body with lavish open fret work decoration, a central ring turned plain socle, ending on a circular spreading base with similar decoration. The swing handle with similar decoration, secured at each end with a shell motif.
Mark of M & W within a shield surround for Mappin & Webb Silversmiths.
London Assay Halmark for 1913.
Condition: Good allover condition, with no losses to decoration. There are three crisp clear Hallmarks visible, a real sign of quality.
Height: 8.75” (22.5cm). Height: (excluding handle) 4.25” (11cm). Diameter: (top rim) 4.25” (11cm).
Weight: (an impressive) 21 ozs. (595 grams).

Mappin & Webb was founded in 1775 when Jonathan Mappin opened a silver workshop in Sheffield, then as now a major centre of the English silver trade.
As a natural progression from silverware, Mappin & Webb created jewels for royal courts across the globe, from the Queen of France Marie Antoinette, to the Empress of Russia and Pricness Grace of Monaco. The brand historically held Royal Warrants to both the Russian Empire and the Japanese Royal Household.
Queen Victoria was the first Monarch to commission Mappin & Webb. Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee necklace was created by the house in 1888 and was designated by the Monarch as an heirloom of the crown.
