About the Item

Pair of mugs in Twilight pattern were designed by Kaneaki Fujimori for Kato Kogei Japan in 1980s. The mugs are decorated with colorful designs in black, olive, and orange that are clearly influenced by Memphis Milano style. Porcelain mugs were made in Nagoya, Japan; unusual asymmetric, angular geometric shape of the mugs supports and adds intensity to the playful colors and shapes of the Post-Modern style of decoration. Kaneaki Fujimori (1935-) graduated from college in 1958, majoring in oil painting and design, and worked as a designer for a major American ceramics company in Chicago. In 1963 Fujimori returned to Japan to work as a freelance designer for ceramic companies in Nagoya. He received multiple prestigious national art awards, and in 1980s he became the art director for Kato Kogei, a major supplier of Japanese ceramics to the international markets. The mugs are marked at the bottom with "Fujimori Collection Twilight Kato Kogei Japan"; they measure 4.1" high with 2.7" diameter opening. The mugs are in excellent vintage condition.

Vitrix Hot Glass Studio Oversized Mug or Vase, NY Art Glass, 1983
By Thomas Buechner III, Vitrex
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural Organic Modern oversized mug was hand blown with thin layer of white glass underlying the deep, jewel-like dark purple fused glass in abstract pattern that is swirling around the gentle curves of the piece; the whole structure is enclosed in thin layer of clear glass in sommerso technique, adding depth and definition to the piece. The central part of the pattern is brough up close to the surface, creating a light texture and adding rare tactile quality to the piece; the upper and lower parts of the pattern are receding into the white background, accentuating the curving sides of the mug. Minimal shape of the piece allows the bold flow of the pattern to take the center stage, and clear glass handle offers minimal distraction from the design while adding functionality. The piece can be used either as a mug or a vase due to large, generous size. The piece is signed and dated in etching on the bottom; rare, hard to find example of vintage Vitrix glasswork would make a great gift to any studio glass or art collector. Founded in 1979 by brothers Matthew and Thomas Buechner III in Corning's Market Street District, Vitrix Hot Glass...
