About the Item

This is a stunning Ridgway porcelain tea service made between 1820 and 1825, which is known as the Regency period. It is decorated with a cobalt blue ground, beautiful hand painted flowers and gilt. The service consists of a teapot and stand, a sucrier and stand, a milk jug, a cake plate, a slop bowl, six cups, 8 saucers and 6 side plates. The shape is typical for its time and is called the "Old English Fluted" shape. The side plates in this service were later additions by Copeland. Ridgway was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Minton, Coalport and others and they created very high quality tea and dinnerware. Ridgway had a tradition of a very wide-ranging offer of china products, anything from the most sublime dinnerware to humble toilet pots. It is notoriously difficult to identify their wares and this is one reason their beautiful tea and dinner wares are often underestimated. This tea set is unmarked, as most Ridgway items, but the reason we know it was made by Ridgway is the pattern number, as well as the shape and the way it was potted; Ridgway made items as elegant as Spode, but usually it was potted a bit thicker. The decorations are stunning in their colours: deep cobalt blue with rich gilding and beautiful hand painted flowers, each arrangement unique. This was a very fashionable design in the early 1820s. As rooms were lit by candles at the time, you can imagine the flickering light being reflected in the lavish gilt - one important reason to use so much gilt on tableware. Usually these tea sets have "trios" that consist of a teacup, a coffee cup and a saucer (as you would never drink tea and coffee at the same time, why invest in an extra saucer?). Unusually, this service has trios that consist of a teacup, a saucer and a side plate; however, the side plates are later additions made by Copeland, between 1851 and 1885. Another interesting thing about this service is that the teacups and saucers don't seem to be potted at the Ridgway factory, but possibly at the Hicks & Meigh or Yates factory. All these factories were located very close to each other and it was not uncommon for factories to buy blanks from each other in order to fill big orders, so this was probably one such "borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbour" moment. It is unusual to find a large tea service like this with the teapot, sucrier and milk jug in perfect condition! Condition report Overall this tea service is in near-pristine condition, with a few damages that do not affect its beauty of usability. There is one chip off the teapot lid, but otherwise the teapot is perfect. The slop bowl has a crack with staple repairs (in stable condition). The sucrier is perfect. The milk jug has had a little bite out of the foot that has been glued back and gilded over - this may have happened in production. The cake plate and two stands are perfect. One side plate has been broken and was glued back together, two side plates are crazed. One teacup handle has a steel wire repair that has been gilded over (in stable condition). One teacup has an old hairline crack in the side, but can still be used. All the hand painted flowers and gilt are in fabulous condition and there is no crazing except where mentioned. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Dimensions teapot stands 13cm (8.1") high incl. finial and measures 27cm (10.5") from handle to spout; teapot stand 20.5cm (8") diameter; sucrier stands 13.5cm (5.25") high incl. finial and measures 19cm (7.5") between the handles; sucrier stand 20.5cm (8") diameter; milk jug stands 10cm (4") high and measures 16.5cm (6.5") from handle to mouth; slop bowl 17cm (6.75") diameter and 8cm (3.25") high; cake plate 23cm (9") diameter; side plates 16cm (6.5") diameter; saucers cm (") diameter; teacup body 9cm (3.5") diameter and stands 5cm (1.9") high.

Repaired: one teacup handle has a 19th C wire repair that makes it entirely stable and good for use. The slop bowl has a stable staple repair and is good for use. One side plate has been broken and was neatly glued back together; it can be used for dry food. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. A few minor damages, overall in fabulous condition and good for use.
