About the Item

A striking and refined Art Deco four-piece tea service in hammered silverplate, comprising a teapot, milk jug, sugar bowl, and matching circular tray. This visually dynamic ensemble showcases the distinctive aesthetic of the late 19th century, with its clean lines, symmetrical forms, and shimmering hammered surface, reflecting the craftsmanship and modernist elegance of the period. The teapot features a rounded, compact silhouette with a sculptural black handle and finial, perfectly complemented by the bulbous forms of the creamer and sugar bowl. The entire set rests harmoniously on a large matching tray with raised rim, creating a cohesive and highly decorative centerpiece suitable for both use and display. The style of this set is clearly inspired by the work of Archibald Knox, an iconic figure in British design, best known for his collaboration with Christopher Dresser and for his Celtic-inspired creations for the firm Liberty and Co. Knox’s influence is evident in the formal language of this service: the simplicity of its volumes, the refinement of its proportions, and the subtle balance between understated ornamentation and functionality. The set is marked beneath with SAMPSON MORDAN & CO LTD / EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver), attesting to its origin from the renowned English firm based in London, with showrooms at Warwick Street, Regent Street, and Beak Street, and production at the City Road Factory and Belfast Chambers. Known primarily for their pioneering work in mechanical objects, including the invention of the propelling pencil by Sampson Mordan Sr. in the early 19th century, the firm also produced luxury silver and silverplate wares of impeccable quality. A superb example of late Victorian to early Art Deco British silverplate, merging technical innovation with timeless elegance.
