Wood and Sons, one of the well-known British potteries, famous for their Toby Jugs, and a training ground for many talented designers, was formed in 1865 in Burslem, England; Woods dynasty survived for over 200 years. Wood and Sons became one of the largest companies in the area, expanding in early 20th century to include a number of potteries, such as the Trent, New Wharf, Stanley and the Alexandra. In 1912 Frederick Rhead was appointed as art director of Wood and Sons and was joined by his daughter Charlotte shortly afterwards. Another talented designer employed by Harry Wood was Edward Thomas Brown Radford, who worked for the company from the early 1920's through 1930s; in 1931 Susie Cooper housed her fledgling company at the Crown Works, and from 1933 to 1959 her pottery had become an associate member of Wood and Sons, with Susie Cooper becoming a director and shareholder of Bursley Ltd. Wood and Sons went public in 1954; in 1982 Tony Wood in partnership with Elizabeth Capper opened Tony Wood Studio 1982 Ltd at the Rising Hawk factory at Fenton. Production of the old Wood & Sons Toby jugs was continued, but many new designs were created for the new company. By 1985 production was moved to the Capper Works, Milburn Road, Cobridge, and in 1991 the company was sold, closing the association between the Woods family and the potteries which had spanned over two hundred years.
