Continental Covered Soup Tureen in Neoclassical Style with Bacchic Decoration
About the Item
A continental covered soup tureen in Neoclassical style with Bacchic décor on a deep eggplant ground. Transfer painted decorations unfold on the circular bowl and pedestal along with the dome-shaped cover crested with a delicate green-painted pinecone. A frieze-like composition in grisaille presents Bacchantes dressed in tunics, holding a bunch of grapes and the thyrsus, attributes of Bacchus, or playing with cupids and satyrs pouring wine. The angular handles, elegantly lined with gilt and white repeated on the neck and base of the lid, bring stateliness to the whole piece. This 20th century continental soup tureen, with its characteristic Neoclassical decor inspired by classical antiquity reliefs along with its clean lines and subtle hue, could harmonize beautifully with every décor in any traditional home.
