Australian Aboriginal Art Janet Forrester Ngala Painting Milky Way Dream, 1994

About the Item

A wonderful, unique, and quite engaging original painting titled "Milky Way Dreaming" by indigenous Australian Aboriginal artist Janet Forrester Ngala (1936-) who began painting in the 1980s. Her work depicts Dreamings or creation stories. As these stories/tales are inherited and passed down with each subsequent generation and considered sacred by tribal members, artists protect specifics by working in an abstract style. Ngala frequently represents the Milky Way in her paintings. Australian Aboriginal people believe that the galaxy is home to ancestral spirits and that each star within the galaxy represents a deceased ancestor/ tribal member or animal. This work is from the famed Kelton Foundation Collection of important Australian Indigenous Works of Art and was exhibited at the Australian Consulate in Los Angeles. Provenance: 1994, Hank Ebes, Aboriginal Gallery of Dreamings, Melbourne, cat. no. 3439, acquired from the above in 1994, Richard Kelton Collection, Santa Monica, Exhibited: Displayed at the Australian Consulate, Los Angeles, CA, 8 May 2007- 8 May 2009 Janet Forrester Ngala's work can be found in various international collections and museums including: The National Museum of Women in Arts, Washington DC The Australian National Gallery, Australia A truly striking original work.
