Australian Aboriginal Art Janet Forrester Ngala Painting Snake & Milky Way Dream

About the Item

A wonderful, unique, and quite engaging original painting titled "Snake And Milky Way Dreaming" by indigenous Australian Aboriginal artist Janet Forrester Ngala (1936-) who began painting in the 1980s. Her work depicts Dreamings or creation stories. As these stories/tales are inherited and passed down with each subsequent generation and considered sacred by tribal members, artists protect specifics by working in an abstract style. Ngala frequently represents the Milky Way in her paintings. Australian Aboriginal people believe that the galaxy is home to ancestral spirits and that each star within the galaxy represents a deceased ancestor/ tribal member or animal. This large work is from the famed Kelton Foundation Collection of important Australian Indigenous Works of Art. Provenance: 1992; Hank Ebes, Aboriginal Gallery of Dreamings, Melbourne, cat. no. AGOD 2408; acquired in 1994; Richard Kelton Collection, Santa Monica; Exhibited: ‘The Painted Song', Santa Monica College, Santa Monica, CA, 17 August - 25 October 2010. Janet Forrester Ngala's work can be found in various international collections and museums including: The National Museum of Women in Arts, Washington DC The Australian National Gallery, Australia A truly striking original work. Would be a great addition to any Australian Aboriginal or tribal art/artifacts collection or an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Dimensions: 67" high, 53" wide.
