About the Item
An impressive and oversized hand carved antique Chinese signboard from Hubei Province, China, dating to circa 1920. The signboard is inscribed with four Chinese characters 標高莲花 (bião gão lián huã), which translate to “A scholar with great talent and wisdom.”
At the top sits a finely carved bat, a traditional Chinese symbol of good fortune. Surrounding the inscription, the frame is adorned with delicately carved lotus flowers and foliage. The lotus, an enduring and important symbol in many asian cultures, represents purity, enlightenment, and rebirth, emerging clean and radiant from muddy waters.
Rich in cultural symbolism and decorative artistry, this piece is both a meaningful artifact and a striking display object, reflecting the craftsmanship and traditional iconography of early 20th century China.
