1960s Antique Large Penca De Balangandan Afro-American Amulet Tinplate, Brazil

About the Item

Absolutely unique very large creole 'Penca De Balangandan' from Brazil from around 1960. Tin base, possibly silver plated. Traditional slave amulet filled with protective & symbolic charm. Often carried by (Afro-Brazilian) Bahian women in traditional ceremonies or special events. Bahian women often were referred to as 'Brazilian women'. However, this particular one would have been placed above a door or inside the house for protection. The Penca De Balangandan features several different symbols or abstract fruit, like oranges, pomegrande, corn cobs, grapes & 'Fruta do Conde or Fruta Pinha'. Unusual large size, this amulet is far from commonly found.
