Vintage Bavarian KUMPF Wooden Wall Vase, Traditional Folk Art 1970s, Germany

About the Item

Beautifully hand decorated 'Kumpf', which origins date back to the 1st to 2nd century a.d., Germany or Tyrol, Austria. The farmers or craftsmen would store their sharpening stone in this vessel which was half filled with water. If not kept inside hanging on the wall, they would take it along to sharpen their tools ( e.g. scythe). For this the hook in the back was made to suspend on the belt, and equally useful as for hanging it upright on the wall. If it was not handy to keep it on you, the tip at the base was made to keep it still upright (to hold the water) by poking it to the soft ground. This very version has been made as a flower vase around 1970 or 1980, hand painted and turned by hand as well.
