About the Item
Fine Pair of Vintage Zulu Tribal Figures – Baboon Master School, South Africa
A finely carved pair of traditional Zulu figures from South Africa, attributed to the Baboon Master School, known for its distinctive style and expressive craftsmanship.
Origin: Zulu people, South Africa
Style: Baboon Master School
Material: Hand-carved hardwood with natural patina
Height: Approx.26 cm
Period: Mid-20th century (c. 1950s–1960s)
This compelling male and female pair features classic Zulu artistic elements: stylized anatomical proportions, serene facial expressions, and symbolic detailing. The male figure holds a club and shield, signifying warrior status, while the female balances a vessel atop her head, representing domestic and ritual roles. Both display confident stance and smooth, tactile surfaces, with subtle dark pigment accents on the hair and garments.
Condition:
Very good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age. No major cracks or losses. Rich patina throughout.
Provenance:
From a private collection of African tribal art.
A distinctive addition for collectors of Southern African sculpture or ethnographic art.
The "Baboon Master" is a nickname given by scholars and collectors to an anonymous but highly distinctive Zulu or Tsonga woodcarver (or workshop) active in late 19th to Early 20th century South Africa, particularly in the KwaZulu-Natal region.
